In a series of events called idiocinecratic, Berlin's favorite indie film curator Eli Lewy brings us a film that hasn't received the love it deserves in the capital city every couple of months. In this context she will be screening Between the Temples on April 30th at 9pm at the City Kino Wedding. The film revolves around a Jewish singer in a faith crisis, and by the look of it, it might go a deep and wholesome path.
As a horror girl, my absolute guilty pleasure is to watch The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and it's impossible to watch that show and not fall in love with the wonderful Carol Kane, who co-stars in Between the Temples, and that is reason enough for me to be crazy excited about this movie.
Creepy Crypt
Unfortunately, the last couple of months Creepy Crypt was limited to repeating the FFF showings and some sneak previews of movies that would be released regularly anyway, so I'm happy to see that they're shaking off from this dud and are showing some solid classics in the next weeks. Special showings include The Evil Dead (April 18 - unfortunately during FFF Nights), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (April 25 - I already have my ticket, this is one of my all time favorites and I can't wait to see it on the big screen which I never have) and finally Crash (May 2 - my favorite Cronenberg hands down, and I haven't read the book the film is based off yet - Crash by J. G. Ballard, so I might do that before the showing). These are really good titles that will make it worth staying up and in Neukölln until late into the night on Saturdays. There is a new series by Yorck Kinos which caught my eye only recently: Boulevard Noir! Since my background isn't exactly crime or noir fiction, I'm through and through horror, but I'd like to expand my knowledge in the genre, especially for my work in Hammett, I'm happy to have discovered this new series which can help me develop my knowledge.I'm a little nervous as to how this can work, as I have a problem concentrating on black and white movies, and there will probably be a number of those in this series, notably Laura which is shown on April 23, and Seconds on May 21, which both look amazing. They're also showing a movie I have seen in the past but forgot about, Mystic River on May 7. Mystic River is also a title written by Dennis Lehane, and it's a good book to start reading this author, he writes really well (and he also wrote the fantastic Shutter Island).
I'm following this wonderful YouTube channel, it's just cinema, and if you have some time to spare, I'd recommend you drop by their channel, where they usually choose a weekly niche theme and daily present good movies in that aisle, like the seven best (anti-) war movies, or top five animated movies from the 80s etc. It is on this channel that I first discovered Mad God. Now, the title is enough to awaken curiosity, but apparently this stop-motion film took the director Phil Tippett thirty years (!) to make and that much labor needs utmost appreciation, so it's a must-see. Luckily the Freilichtbühne Weißensee is screening it on May 8th, 8pm, so we can all see it, and on top of it there's live background music by TT Geygenschrei & Sonic Inkraut, so there are no excuses, get your ticket here. There's not much in terms of books and readings going on that I'm aware of, but on May 19, at 7.30 pm Cory Doctorow will be at the Wasserturm to present the German translation of his book, Entshittification. Entrance is free but you need to register as usual, as far as I know.
As I already stated above, I don't think 2026 has been a good year in terms of horror films so far (but not so for horror books, I need to add, amazing books have been published this year), but there are still a couple of films apart from festival titles that I'm looking forward to seeing, they are: Alpha by Julia Ducournau, the new A24 film Backrooms, the exciting looking found footage Bodycam, Faces of Death which deals with snuff on the internet and looks really good to me, Hokum (I super enjoyed Daniel McCarthy's previous movie Oddity and it looks like I was not the only one. I have no idea what the budget for his new movie is but it looks expensive, like he has been discovered), In a Violent Nature 2 (Yes, yes and yes! My favorite movie of 2024 gets a sequel!), I really don't know what to make of the trailer but I find Iron Lung very intriguing and I hope I'll get a chance to see it on the big screen, likewise Psycho Killer which has disappointingly low ratings but I want to see it for myself, and finally Ready Or Not: Here I Come, because I need some comedy and fun in my life too.Cross our fingers all of these are good watches and save the horror cinema of this year.
