An Amazing Final Girls Berlin Film Festival Lies Ahead!

Well, I'm going to say it out loud, this year's Berlinale is a dud. Insanely quickly sold out tickets, a lukewarm selection of films, a lack of genre pictures in its program, and finally idiotic comments from the jury... Berlinale is already a fail and makes me want to look ahead for other festivals. Honestly, I'm not sure I'll give it much space in my future life, I think I'd rather save my leave days for the FFF and the Final Girls Berlin. Sorry for the rant.

That being said, let us take a look at the non-arguably most enjoyable third station in film season: the glorious Final Girls Berlin Film Festival.

I'm very happy and proud that I can be in FGB's this year's jury for awarding the best feature film, and deciding which one of the eight features, The Virgin of the Quarry Lake, Honey Bunch, Frewaka, Queens of the Dead, Dead Lover, Camp, Mother of Flies, Eve's Bayou and finally If I Had Legs I'd Kick You is best. I already started watching the screeners (and already have something like a favorite 😉) but I'll write a longer post AFTER the festival and review all of them. Just as an aside, The Virgin of the Quarry Lake is based on the Mariana Enriquez short story Our Lady of the Quarry, very exciting!

But, my gods, will you look at this program? Eleven short blocks encompassing my favorite themes eco-horror, social horror, midnight, folk horror, nightmares, and body horror; four workshops including stuff about sounds and collages; two talks and one live score! If that doesn't sound amazing, I don't know what does!

We will also be at the vendor day, that is Sunday March 8th, with an Otherland stand where we will sell horror books written by women! Last year we had a lot of fun and there were so many other fun stuff there, like a stand with the likes of this very elegant poison/tea cup by EM I bought, I hope she'll be there again.

Finally, there's another fun event coming up, the "Stummfilmfestival" in which classical silent films like Nosferatu, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or Metropolis will be screened while a musician plays live music to go with it. I have never seen this, but it sounds like a fun concept and definitely something very original to do.

Well, my friends, film season is in full swing - I hope you're seeing good movies (I saw No Other Choice today, and I loved it) and having a good time despite the world and work and all. See you around!
