Are you still hanging on to the dated (and frankly, creepy) Oktoberfest, the fest of the drunks doing drunk things? Well, there's so much better fests and events in Berlin, and you needn't be drunk to endure them - in October alone we have not one but two indie genre film fests going, plus Halloween screenings, plus an author's evening with Samanta Schweblin who will present her new book (And it's possible another author will be presenting her new book at the Otherland, but I'll announce that when it is certain!). Let's take a look at what's coming up!
Obscura Filmfest October 16-18
Obscura is a small festival focusing on independent genre films which will never be shown in a normal, mainstream cinema in their normal, mainstream program. So it's a rare opportunity to find hidden gems and niche-flicks. They usually have a high number of guest filmmakers, probably due to the indie nature of the festival, thus the guests being more humble and genuine compared to big shots who are too good for such events.
It takes place at both Zoo Palast and Klick Kino and spans over three days. The films that caught my eye were Lapin Noir, Jimmy, and Devour. The shorts screening looks fun too, so I'll definitely drop by if I can make the time.
Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest October 23-26, 2025
This year the festival changes its setting and moves to the Hollywood Media Hotel, a hotel of whose existence I was ignorant of until now. There isn't much information on the website yet, two movies seem to be approved, Jeit and Berlin Loop, and both sound interesting. Hopefully the full program will be out soon.
Final Girls Berlin Halloween Special October 31st
It's the same as every Halloween, almost a little tradition: at the City Kino Wedding, 18:30 the best shorts of the year, 20:30 the costume contest and from 21:00 on the feature screening, and this year it is the (so far) only Palme d'Or winner horror film directed by a woman, Titane.
I am bummed that I have to be at a birthday party during the shorts, but I will come running for the feature screening.
On November 8 Samanta Schweblin will be at the DTK Wasserturm (Kopischstraße 7 - 10965 Berlin-Kreuzberg) for a reading event and present her latest book, Good and Evil and Other Stories.
The Creepy Crypt movies for the next month don't look too appealing to me, except for one I missed at the Fantasy Filmfest, but I'm sure next month there will be more exciting movies again.
It's not everybody's idea of fun to visit bigger events or festivals, and those need not worry. There will be quite a few more or less good movies showing in regular cinemas in the next couple of months, some of them are; The Bride, Good Boy, Dracula (A Love Tale), Tron: Ares, Predator: Badlands, The Running Man, Keeper, Eddington, and Him.
So there's something for everyone this fall, and by the sheer number of good movies opening, I might as well move my living space to Delphi Lux at least for the month of November.
Hope you're having a great fall so far, and maybe we can meet up at some festival or event? See you there!
