Again, it's time to draw a new overview of what's expecting us in terms of horror movies in cinemas and film festivals and stream services in the next couple of months. And it looks good!
Let's start with the upcoming Fantasy Filmfest Nights, which takes place between 8. - 11. May at the Zoo Palast cinema in Charlottenburg. I'm loving the entire selection this season, I often feel like the spring movies are even better than the original film festival which takes place in September. Short explanation for those unfamiliar with the FFF; the main festival takes place some time beginning of September, complemented by two mini-festivals, one end of January (or, like this year, beginning of February) and a second one in April or May. And I can safely say I was never disappointed by the spring screenings although I can't claim the same for the other two festivals. Maybe a coincidence. But anyway, let's take a look at the screenings I'm not missing. I always leave some room to spontaneously go see more, but these are the tickets I've got so far:Una Ballena/A Whale (Spain/Italy 2024)
The trailer to this "noir meets marine horror" movie is super plain, unadorned, and frugal in terms of color and visuals, and to me that's a very pleasant look. I also like the idea of a serial killer with some kind of connection to a sea creature, it almost reminisces of the call of Cthulhu, although I'm not sure if that's the purpose here. A character with the name of Melville is mentioned, so maybe there's rather some kind of connection to Moby Dick? We'll see.
A Girl With Closed Eyes (South Korea 2024)
The trailer to this murder mystery gives me Turkish television series vibes, and that's great, as far as I'm concerned. Always glad to watch stuff from South Korea!
The Weekend (Nigeria 2024)
Trailer to be found here. I did read a fair share of horror and science fiction from Nigeria, but I can't claim the same for movies, despite there being a gigantic film industry known under the name of Nollywood for movies produced in the country. Accordingly, I'm extremely excited to watch The Weekend, which is about a guy bringing home his girlfriend for her to meet his family, but regretting it as he remembers why he left in the first place.

Each year there's a movie I especially anticipate as I see a potential in there, although my gut feeling isn't always on the spot - sometimes it pays off, sometimes I end up disappointed. This year I have that feeling for The Rule of Jenny Pen: I love the cast, I love movies about older people, and creepy dolls. So let's just hope it's as good as I hope it is.
There are some movies in the lineup that I definitely want to see, but since they will have theatrical release in the coming months it's more profitable for me to see them in a regular cinema instead. But honestly, the whole lineup is so good... It's just that with a new kitchen I'm still paying off, a broken laundry machine and life three times as expensive as before, I'm just not rich enough at the moment.
Let's go to the Creepy Crypt from here, which is the Yorck Kino special which brings you one horror movie every Saturday night at the Rollberg Kino. There's some upcoming screenings that look really good, for example;
Final Destination Bloodlines - I actually have been preparing for this like it's some kind of important event, but I've been re-watching the movies in the Final Destination franchise, being terrorized by everyday situations with death at your heels.
Sneak Preview - OK, so the last one was a little disappointing for me and I walked out. But I'm not giving up and I've got my fingers crossed that it's Clown in the Cornfield this time!
The Ugly Stepsister - The story of Cinderella told from the point of view of one of the evil step sisters that I missed at the Berlinale, and I'm deliberately missing at the Fantasy Filmfest, so that I'll finally see it at the Creepy Crypt!
I just discovered a second series of special screenings at Yorck Kinos, which is called Torment Nexus and is described as "a film series about arriving in the future cinema warned us about", squee! It takes place once a month on a Wednesday at the Odeon in Schöneberg and the next interesting showings are 2001: A Space Odyssey on June 4th at 20:30 and Terminator 2: Judgment Day on September 3rd this year.
On a last note about Yorck Kinos, next week there will be a series of screenings of Wes Anderson movies at the Odeon (I guess because it's his birthday), including my favorites The Royal Tennenbaums and Darjeeling Limited. I think his movies do touch many people in different ways, for me he can very perfectly reflect the dynamics between three siblings and having an asshole for a father, so much so that it was impossible for my sister to watch Tennenbaums for the longest time because it was so real for us. I already have my ticket to re-watch this favorite of mine.
A masterpiece of Russian magical realism has also been filmed, The Master and Margarita, and is being released in Germany tomorrow, May 1st.
Last but not least here are some titles that will have their releases in the upcoming couple of months, and that sound interesting.
The Ritual
You have to love an exorcism movie which claims to be based on true events, I know I do. It makes everything so much scarier, because whatever anyone might say, demonic possession is arguably the most terrifying horror trope of them all. And I secretly always wanted to see Al Pacino in the role of an exorcist, so this might be a dream come true.
Together
Seriously, I have no idea what to make of the trailer of this movie. Young couple moves into a new house, strange things happen, all nothing very much new. But those little shaking movements? They're quite unsettling to look at, don't you think?
The Moogai
Although motherhood, protecting babies yada yada yada isn't my cup of tea and its subject makes this movie uninteresting to me, I'm not writing it off because I don't think I ever saw a horror movie revolving around Aboriginal people and that makes it tempting.
Pretty Boy
A masked killer named Pretty Boy takes a blind woman from her home in order to crash a Valentine's Day party? Say no more!
The Severed Sun
Nothing like a good, vicious folk horror story in the summer!
Have a great time!
