A Terrific, Horror Filmic Start Into the New Year!

Happy and healthy new year 2021, everyone!

The year starts with great news for Berlin horror fans - the program and time schedule for the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival is ready! I have to say I'm super excited for this year's selection - especially, as always, for the short film selection, squee! Here goes their message:

Final Girls Berlin Film Festival, a festival showcasing horror directed, written, and/or produced by women and non-binary people will be doing things a bit differently this year - we are splitting our 6th edition! Part 1 of the festival will take place online on February 4-7 2021 and Part 2 will be on Halloween weekend, October 29-31 2021, at City Kino Wedding in Berlin.

Here is what we planned for February!

Our opening night film is Sabrina Merten's debut feature FELLWECHSELZEIT (Berlin Premiere), a disturbing, brilliantly conceived psychological thriller about young Stephanie who is trapped in a dysfunctional family set-up with no way of getting out.
Another film about being sealed off from the world is DARKNESS (German Premiere), directed by Emanuela Rosi, following three sisters who have been ordered to stay inside by their father due to the apocalypse that's looming outside.
On the other end of the genre spectrum is Brea Grant's horror-comedy 12 HOUR SHIFT (German Premiere) revolving around Nurse Mandy (Angela Bettis), who wants to get through a shift of her draining job while also trying to pull off a black market organ-trading scheme.
Laura Casabé's THE RETURNED (Berlin Premiere) from Argentina is a haunting genre tale that reckons with the country's colonial past.
Jill Gevargizian's THE STYLIST (German Premiere) follows Claire, a hairstylist who has trouble connecting with others and has horrifying ways of expressing her distress.
Our February edition also includes a wide array of shorts! Our short blocks are devoted to cyber horror, young girl protagonists, comedy horror, isolation, and revenge.
We were able to invite more remarkable horror specialists that live far away to this edition because geography was not a barrier! Our supporting program will include talks on “Rethinking Women's Horror Filmmaking,“ “Girl's Gone Wild – Young Girls in Horror,“ “A History of Sadomasochism, Domination, and Submission in Horror Cinema,“ from specialists from the US, the UK, and Australia.
There will also be a screenwriting workshop, a Spinsters of Horror podcast episode on satanic horror, a top 10 of horror's best Final Girls, and more! All of our films will be accessible to audiences all over Germany. We invite you to join us for four days of chilling (and frequently timely) horror – in the comfort of your own home!

Final Girls on Ice - On Stephen Graham Jones' Indian Lake Trilogy

Slowly but surely, the "Indian Lake Trilogy" is on its way to become author Stephen Graham Jones' magnum opus - that's the prime takeaway from the recent, massive and very much justified success surrounding its second installment Don't Fear the Reaper (only Reaper in text for purposes of brevity). It isn't unusual for a second book in a series to achieve more success than its predecessor, the first one having already separated the wheat from the chaff among readers and having established a backstory and setting for the protagonist. Solely people who accept and enjoy the terms set in the first book will stick around for more. The first book My Heart Is A Chainsaw ( Chainsaw ) of the Indian Lake series and its follower Reaper are no exceptions. When Chainsaw came out in the summer of 2021, it truly dropped like a bomb into horror circles. Even though there had been indigenous representation in the genre, (not the least thanks to Jones himself and his riveting

An Interview with Juan Martinez, Author of "Extended Stay"

Of Nuns and Such - Best Religion Horror

With not one but two nunsploitation movies about to be released soon, I have taken the cue that it's time for a blog post of collected nun and religion horror movies that are worth something for all I know. Because there are a lot useless ones, looking at you The Unholy and The Nun .
